Abstract

The dimerization of mono-olefins of at least three carbon atoms is effected in the presence of activators comprising hydrides of Be, Al, Ga and In or their derivatives wherein one or more hydrogen atoms are substituted by alkyl or monovalent aromatic hydrocarbon radicals, as in the parent Specification but at temperatures above 250 DEG but not exceeding 350 DEG C. The activator may be present as a molecular compound with another organic compound or a complex with an alkali metal hydride, alkyl or aryl. Olefin and activator may be injected continuously into a reaction tube by pumps controlled to cut out when a pressure of e.g. 210 atmospheres is reached and come in when this falls below 190 atmospheres. Products released at the upper end are fed to separating columns to separate the activator which is recycled. Examples relate to dimerization of propylene, alone or with propane, and butene-1, at various temperatures and 100 or 200 atmospheres.
