Abstract
Olefins are polymerized at pressures of not more than 500 p.s.i.g. in the presence of a catalyst comprising an alkyl aluminium compound and a reducible metal compound of Group IVa, Va or VIa, the polymerization being carried out in the presence of a diluent consisting essentially of a liquefied normally gaseous saturated hydrocarbon having 2-5 carbon atoms per molecule, the diluent being separated from the resulting solid polymer in a flashing step wherein a low enough pressure is maintained to flash off the diluent. Specified olefins are ethylene, propylene, n-butenes, isobutylene, butadiene and isoprene while ethane, propane, butane, isobutane and neopentane are the specified diluents. The catalyst may be inactivated by adding an alcohol prior to the flashing stage. The catalyst may be prepared by mixing the reducible metal compound with some of the alkyl aluminium compound, additional aluminium compound being added during the polymerization. Apparatus for carrying out the process is described.
