Abstract

The invention comprises polyalkyl indanes in which 3 to 6 of the hydrogen atoms of the cyclopentane ring are substituted by alkyl groups containing 1 to 3 carbon atoms. These compounds may be prepared by resetting a styrene hydrocarbon with an alkene at 10-30 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst such as sulphuric acid of 80-95 per cent strength, mixed anhydrous acetic acid and sulphuric acid, or boron trifluoride etherate. Specified compounds are: 1,2,3,3,5-pentamethyl indane, 1,1,3,3,5 - pentamethyl indane, 1,1,3,5 - tetramethyl-3-ethyl indane, 1,1,5-trimethyl-3,3-diethyl indane, 1,1,3,3-tetramethyl-5-ethyl indane, 1,1,2,3,3,5-hexamethyl indane, 1,1,2,3,5-pentamethyl-3-ethyl indane, 1,1,2,3,3-pentamethyl - 5 - ethyl indane, 1,1,3,3,5 - pentamethyl - 2 - ethyl indane, 1,1,2,2,3,3,5 - heptamethyl indane, a mixture of 1,1,2,2,3,5-hexamethyl-3-ethyl indane and 1,1,2,3,3,5-hexamethyl-2-ethyl indane, 1,1,2,2,3,3-hexamethyl-5-ethyl indane, 1,1,3,5-tetramethyl 3-isopropyl indane, and 1,1,2,3,3-pentamethyl indane. The styrenes may be a -methylstyrene, p-methylstyrene, p-a -dimethylstyrene, o-a -dimethylstyrene, m-a -dimethylstyrene, p-ethyl-a -methylstyrene, p-n-propyl-a -methylstyrene, and p-isopropyl-a -methylstyrene. The alkenes may be isobutene, 2-methyl-butene-1, trimethylethene, tetramethylethene, 2,3-dimethylbutene-1, trimethylethylene and tert.-butylethene. These compounds may be used as intermediates in the manufacture of carbonyl derivatives as described in Specification 796,129.
