Abstract
An olefine which is gaseous at standard temperature and pressure is polymerized at a pressure of at least 5,000 p.s.i. and at temperatures of 170-260 DEG C. using as a catalyst an o,o-tert. alkyl o-alkyl monoperoxycarbonate, containing up to 6 carbon atoms in the tert. alkyl group and up to 8 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, in liquid form. The olefine may be ethylene. The catalyst may be o,o-tert. butyl o-isopropyl monoperoxy carbonate with optionally ditert. butyl peroxide and tert. butyl hydroperoxide. The polymerization may be carried out in the presence of butane as chain transfer agent and rate of reaction and molecular weight controller. The solvent for the catalyst may be hexane, the catalyst solution may be fed continuously to the ethylene which is fed to the reactor and unreacted ethylene may be recycled.
