Abstract

1,204,863. Dimers and co-dimers. PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO. 4 Dec., 1967 [5 Dec., 1966; 9 Oct., 1967], No. 54977/67. Heading C5E. Olefin dimers or codimers are made by contacting a cyclic monolefin having up to 12 C per mol. or an acyclic olefin having 2 to 12 C atoms and no branching nearer the double bond than the 3-position or a mixture of two such olefins with a catalyst composition formed on mixing (1) a nickel complex of formula (R 3 P) 2 NiY 2 , (R 3 PO) 2 NiX 2 , (R 3 AsO) 2 NiX 2 , or a complex of NiX 2 with where R represents a C 1-20 hydrocarbon radical, Y is a halogen or a radical as defined for R, X is halogen, n is 0 or 1 to 4, R<SP>11</SP> is hydrogen, CH 3 or C 2 H 5 and (2) an aluminium compound of formula R x AlX y , where R and X are as defined above and x and y are integers such that x+y=3, R and X in components (1) and (2) being the same or different. Specified monolefins are ethylene, propylene, butenes-1 and -2, pentenes-1 -2 and cyclo-, cyclohexene, 3: 4: 5- trimethylcyclohexene, 3-methylbutene-1, cycloheptene, hexene-2, heptene-1, cyclo-octene, 4: 4-dimethylheptene-2, decene-1, dodecene-1 and mixtures thereof. Examples describe the dimerization of ethylene, propylene, butene-1, pentene-1 and pentene-2, and the co-dimerization of ethylene and propylene, propylene and pentene-1, and ethylene and cyclopentene (to 1- ethylcyclopentene).
