Abstract
Dimers of a -olefines of 3-6 carbon atoms or codimers thereof with each other or with ethylene are formed from the monomer or comonomers in the presence of a mixture of (a) an alkyl derivative of a metal of Group I, II or III and (b) an alkoxide of a transition metal of Group IV, V or VI of the Periodic Table, the molar ratio of (a) to (b) being from 2 to 10 : 1. The dimerisation of propylene and butene-1 and the codimerisation thereof with ethylene are referred to. Compound (a) is preferably an alkyl derivative of lithium, beryllium or aluminium and (b) an alkoxide of titanium, vanadium or chromium. A hydrocarbon solvent is preferably used at temperatures of 50 DEG C.-100 DEG C. and pressures of 10-30 atmospheres. The codimerisation of propylene and ethylene yields 2- and 3-methylbutene-1, useful as precursors of isoprene.
