Abstract

Olefins capable of double bond shift are isomerized in the presence of sepiolite as catalyst. The sepiolite preferably has a surface area of at least 100 m.2/g. and has been washed with acid to remove alkali metal. Conversion is preferably effected in vapour phase at 50-500 DEG C. and 0.1-10 vol./vol./hr. in the presence of an inert diluent, e.g. nitrogen in a ratio to hydrocarbon of 0.1-10 : 1. The examples illustrate the conversion of 4-methylpentene-1 to 4-methylpentene-2 and 2-methylpentene-2.
