Abstract
The double bond in an olefine is transferred to a more central position in the molecule at 0-100 DEG C. in the presence of an alkali metal disposed on an anhydrous support having a surface area of at least 25 square metres per gram, and in the absence of any catalyst promoter. Conversions referred to are 1-butene to 2-butene, 1- or 2- hexene to 2- or 3-hexene and the conversion of n- or iso-amylenes to amylenes in which the double bond is more central. The catalyst is preferably sodium and/or potassium in an amount of 2-30% by weight of the support which may be gamma- or theta-alumina, high surface area silica, charcoals, magnesia, silica-alumina or silica-alumina-magnesia. Liquid or vapour phase may be used, preferably using a fixed bed catalyst at 1-70 atmospheres and a L.H.S.V. of 0,1-20.
