Abstract
A low pressure process for the polymerization of aliphatic olefins comprises contacting an aliphatic olefin with a catalyst comprising oxides, as hereinafter defined, of chromium, aluminium and silicon the ratio by weight of alumina to silica being from 15 : 85 to 40 : 60. Oxides are defined as including both free oxides and those present in chemically combined for e.g. silicates. Specified olefins are ethylene, propylene and their mixtures. The polymerization may be carried out in the liquid phase. The preferred proportions of alumina to silica are from 20 : 80 to 35 : 65 and the chromium oxide content from 0,1 to 10%. Specifications 804,641 and 804,642 are referred to.ALSO:A catalyst for low pressure aliphatic olefin polymerization, comprises oxides of chromium, aluminium and silicon, the ratio of alumina to silica being from 15:85 to 40:60. Oxides is defined as including both free oxides and those present in chemically combined form e.g. silicates. The preferred ratio of alumina to silica is 20:80 to 35:65 while the preferred chromium oxide content is from 0.1 to 10%. The alumina/silica starting material may contain fluorine. Specifications 804,641 and 804,642 are referred to.
