Abstract
Gaseous paraffins are dehydrogenated by passing them over a catalyst containing aluminium oxide, chromium sesquioxide, 0.1-5 per cent of ferric oxide and 0.5-75 per cent of diatomaceous material at a temperature in the range 325-700 DEG C. Preferably the diatomaceous material is stirred into a solution of an aluminium and iron salt and iron and chromium hydroxide are precipitated directly on to the diatomaceous material and the chromium sesquixoide is added subsequently. In the examples (a) propane is converted to propylene; (b) ethane is converted to ethylene and (c) butane is converted to butylene by passing the paraffins over the above-described catalyst at a temperature in the range 325-700 DEG C.ALSO:A catalyst, used for dehydrogenating gaseous paraffin, consists of aluminium oxide and chromium sesequioxide with 0.5-75 per cent of diatomaceous material and 0.1-5 per cent of ferric oxide. The catalyst may be regenerated, when necessary, by means of atmospheric oxygen.
