Abstract

Paraffins or olefins are dehydrogenated by reaction with an excess over the stoichiometric amount necessary for formation of diolefin of oxygen and a halogen, particularly chlorine or bromine, or a compound thereof capable of liberating halogen, at below 400 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst for the oxidation of hydrogen halide to halogen and water. The amount of halogen may be 0.05-0.2 gram atom per mol. of hydrocarbon and of oxygen, e.g. as air, about 20% above the stoichiometric amount. The catalyst may be an oxide of iron, manganese or cobalt or a halide of copper supported on pumice or alumina. Butane, butenes, isopentane or isopentene may be reacted.
