Abstract
Mono-olefins or acetylenes of two to four carbon atoms are polymerised at 10 DEG C.-150 DEG C. in the presence of an oxide of the gel type in which hydrogen atoms of the chemically bound hydroxyl groups of the gel structure have been replaced by -BH2 or -B(OH)2 groups to give a surface modified gel. Suitable starting hydrocarbons are ethylene, propylene, isobutylene, acetylene and methyl acetylene. Specified gels are alumina, silica, magnesia and mixtures thereof and they are modified after drying to remove all adsorbed water by reaction with diborane which reacts with -OH groups to give -OBH2 groups which may be reacted with water vapour to convert them to -OB(OH)2. In examples a silica-alumina catalyst is reacted with diborane and used to polymerise acetylene to benzene, methyl acetylene to trimethyl benzene and ethylene to hexane and cyclohexane; alumina after reaction with diborane is used to polymerise acetylene to benzene.ALSO:Silica, alumina and magnesia gels or their mixtures are surface modified by replacing the hydrogen atoms of the chemically bound hydroxyl groups by -BH2 or -B(OH)2 groups. After drying to remove adsorbed water the gel is reacted with diborane which converts -OH groups to -OBH2 groups which can then be reacted with water vapour to form -OB(OH)2 groups. If desired the number of hydroxyl groups in the gel may first be reduced by heating at above 150 DEG C. thereby reducing the amount of bound boron in the product. The modified gels are useful as catalysts in polymerizing olefins or acetylenes.
