Abstract

Titanium dioxide particles are treated with one or more olefine oxides so that the olefine oxides remain associated with the particles. The treatment may be carried out at temperatures and pressures above atmospheric by either placing the titanium dioxide and olefine oxide in a sealed container, or by passing a stream of the olefine oxide over the finely divided particles. The excess olefine oxide may be removed after treatment by allowing the mixture to stand under normal or reduced pressure and/or elevated temperature and if desired in a stream of inert gas. The titanium dioxide particles may have previously been coated with silica, alumina and/or titanium dioxide. Substituted olefine oxides may be employed. Olefine oxides referred to are ethylene, propylene, butylene, amylene, hexylene and styrene oxide. In all examples temperatures of 100 DEG C. are employed.ALSO:Titanium dioxide particles are treated with one or more olefine oxides so that the olefine oxides remain associated with the particles of titanium dioxide. Olefine oxides referred to are ethylene, propylene, butylene, amylene, hexylene and styrene oxide. In all examples temperatures of 100 DEG C. are employed. In Example (1) the coated titanium dioxide was incorporated into an aqueous paint medium containing a dispersing agent and an aqueous emulsion of polyvinyl acetate.
