Abstract

Vinyl chloride is purified by contacting it, in admixture with hydrogen chloride, in vapour phase with a chloride of iron, nickel or cobalt, e.g. at 0-300 DEG C. The proportion of HCl is preferably at least 3% of the volume of the vinyl chloride. The metal chloride may be supported. The purified vinyl chloride may be isolated by e.g. liquefaction, distillation or washing with water. A suitable starting mixture containing vinyl chloride and HCl is the product obtained by cracking ethylene dichloride. In examples the purified vinyl chloride has a much reduced butadiene content. Specification 836,970 is referred to.
