Abstract
The process of the parent Specification for the removal of NO from industrial gases is modified to apply to industrial gases also containing HCN as impurity, for example cracking gases, producer gas and coke-oven gases and comprises maintaining in the gas mixture, which is to be subjected to compression, an amount of unsaturated hydrocarbon such that the molar ratio between such hydrocarbon and the HCN content of the gas mixture is at least 4: 1. Cyclopentadiene is the preferred hydrocarbon; the content of the latter in the gas mixture is preferably at least 1.5 g./m.3 N.T.P. The HCN content in the mixture is preferably reduced to less than 500 mg./m.3 N.T.P. before the NO is removed, for instance by means of a wet gas washing with a soda solution and/or by means of a dry gas purification with ferruginous earth.
