Abstract
In the isomerization of hydrocarbons in the presence of a liquid Friedel-Crafts catalyst, a portion of the hydrocarbons in the reaction zone is evaporated to remove at least part of the heat evolved by the reaction. The highest pressure in the reaction zone is preferably equal to the bubble point pressure of the hydrocarbon feed at the inlet temperature and in the range 1-22 atmospheres. If introduced at reaction temperature 5-35% wt. of the feed may be vaporized; if introduced at above reaction temperature, preferably not more than 17 DEG C. above, up to 50% may be vaporized. Isomerization of C4-C6 paraffins is effected in the presence of aluminium halide at 20-120 DEG C., preferably in the presence of hydrogen and hydrogen halide and antimony trichloride. The catalyst sludge is extracted with feed hydrocarbons to recover active components.
