Abstract

Tetramethyl lead is prepared by the reaction of a monosodium lead alloy and methyl chloride in the presence of a catalyst and 1,2-dichloroethane. The dichloroethane may be present in amounts of 8 to 25% by weight based on the alloy. Optionally up to 10% by weight of an inert liquid hydrocarbon having a boiling-point in the range 90-150 DEG C., e.g. toluene, may also be present. The catalyst may be trimethyl aluminium, methyl aluminium or methyl aluminium sesquichloride. The reaction may be carried out at 70-130 DEG C. in an autoclave under autogenous pressure and the product, tetramethyl lead stabilized with, e.g., one-fifth to two-fifths by weight of dichloroethane, and possibly containing inert hydrocarbon, removed by steam distillation.
