Abstract

A component of a supported catalyst for the vapour phase stereospecific polymerization of alpha-olefins is prepared by impregnating an inert inorganic granular support with metallic aluminium and then contacting the resulting material with a halide of a transition metal of Group IV, V, VI or VIII in its highest valency state in excess of the chemical equivalent of the aluminium and less than that which would saturate the support, at 100 DEG to 400 DEG C. under anhydrous and inert diluent- and oxygen-free conditions. Specified supports are calcium chloride, sodium carbonate, calcium phosphate and magnesium chloride while titanium tetrachloride and vanadium pentachloride are specified halides. The component together with an organometallic compound of a metal of Group II or III, e.g. aluminium or beryllium alkyls, and alkyl halides is used to polymerize alpha-olefins, e.g. propylene. The organometallic compound may also be supported preferably on polypropylene granules. The product is purified by washing with water, and methanol and drying.
