Abstract
1406282 Polymerization catalyst INTERNATIONAL SYNTHETIC RUBBER CO Ltd 5 March 1973 [27 Jan 1972] 3866/72 Heading C3P Unsaturated hydrocarbons are polymerized in the presence of a catalyst comprising (a) the reaction product obtained by intimately mixing (i) an organomagnesium compound and (ii) a vanadium, niobium or tantalum compound, (b) an organometallic compound of a metal of Groups IA, II, IIIB, IVB or VB, and (c) a halogen-containing organic activator having at least two halogen atoms attached to a carbon atom, which grouping is activated by an adjacent electron or donor group and/or one or more adjacent carbon-carbon double bonds. The catalyst may be supported and fluid bed conditions used, the usual inorganic materials being mentioned. Component (b) is most suitably an organoaluminium compound and may be complexed with Lewis acids such as aluminium halides. In examples, ethylene, ethylene/ propylene and ethylene/propylene/ethylidene norbornene are polymerized, in some cases in the presence of hydrogen, and in the presence of (a) reaction products of (i) n-butyl magnesium isopropoxide or phenyl magnesium bromide and (ii) vanadium oxytrichloride, (b) ethyl aluminium sesquichloride, and (c) butyl perchlorocrotonate or ethyl trichloroacetate.
