Abstract

1414883 Catalysts for olefin polymerization NAPHTACHIMIE SA 18 Sept 1973 [18 Sept 1972 13 June 1973] 43740/73 Heading C3P Olefins may be polymerized at low pressure in the presence of a catalyst system comprising (a) as a catalyst, a solid compound of a metal selected from Ti, V, Cr, Zr, Ni, Hf, Ta and W, the metal being at least partly in a valency state lower than 4, the compound having been subjected, before polymerization, to a preactivation treatment by being brought into contact with magnesium and one or more halogenated hydrocarbons, and (b) as co-catalyst, one or more organometallic compounds of Group II or III of the periodic table, such as an organo aluminium compound. In examples TiCl 3 or TiCl 2 . 5 (OC 3 H 7 ) 0 . 5 is pre-treated with Mg and a monochloroalkane (e.g. ethyl chloride or nbutyl chloride) and then mixed with Al(i-C 4 H 9 ) 3 or AlCl(C 2 H 5 ) 2 , and ethylene and/or propylene, and propylene/but-1-ene are polymerized in solution.
