Abstract

(CN)2 is prepared by reacting HCN and NO2 in the vapour phase at elevated temperature, e.g. 175-650 DEG C. The molar ratio HCN: NO2 should be 2:1 to 7:1 and the space velocity of the reactants should be 10-1200 l./l./hr. The effluent gas is scrubbed with liquid HCN at -10 to 15 DEG C. to remove NO2 and HCN, which may be re-used, and the overhead is passed to a trap, containing a mixture of liquid and solid (CN)2 at -80 to -25 DEG C., whence liquid (CN)2 is recovered. The NO passing overhead may be oxidised and recycled.
