Abstract

A process for obtaining organically substituted hydrazines from synthesis solutions, which are produced from ammonia, alkali metal hypochlorite solution and an amine, comprises adding an alkali metal hydroxide to the synthesis solution to bring the solution to an alkali metal hydroxide concentration of 10 to 40% by weight, extracting with an inert organic solvent capable of dissolving such hydrazine and recovering the organic hydrazines from this extract by fractional distillation. Suitable extraction solvents are aromatic amines, aromatic hydroxy compounds and aliphatic amines having at least 7 carbon atoms. The extract of organic hydrazines is preferably treated with solid caustic alkali during the distillation in order to remove small quantities of water. The examples describe the recovery of mono- and di-methyl hydrazine.
