Abstract

Cellulose esters and ethers, particularly nitrocellulose and acetylcellulose are treated with absolute alcohol for the purpose of removing water absorbed in the ester or ether, or for its purification, the alcohol extracting, particularly in the case of nitrocellulose, the lower esters. The product that remains is more homogeneous, has an improved stability, is free from water, and is suitable for the manufacture of artificial silk, plates, films, smokeless powders and dynamites, and for such uses the product may be mixed with other organic or inorganic substances. Solutions of the purified products when applied to metal surfaces show no coloration. From the solution obtained in the preliminary extraction, the lower esters may be precipitated by water and these esters may be worked up into spinning solutions, varnishes, &c. Absolute alcohol may also be used in the preparation of solutions of nitrocellulose or acetylcellulose to be used for spinning artificial silk.ALSO:The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) refers to the addition of absolute alcohol during the etherification of alcohols and the esterification of alcohol for the purpose of dissolving, and so removing from the sphere of action, the by-products such as ethyl sulphates and mono esters that are formed during the reaction. By such removal, the speed of the reaction is increased, the yield improved, and it is possible to reduce the proportion of dehydrating-agent. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) refers to the purification of edible fats by extraction with absolute alcohol. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
