Abstract

Crude solutions of fatty acid esters of cellulose obtained by the acylation of cellulose in the presence of solvents insoluble in water, for example chlorinated hydrocarbons, are worked up by firstly partially deacidifying the crude solution as by extraction with small amounts of water, and then forcing into water while maintaining a large surface of contact, the temperature of the water lying above the boiling point of the azeotropic mixture of solvent, water, and acid. The crude solution may itself be heated during precipitation, which may take place under reduced pressure. In examples, (1) a reaction mixture of cellulose acetate prepared in the presence of ethylene chloride is extracted twice with water so that the residue contains only 30-50 per cent of the original acetic acid and is forced through a sieve into water at 85 DEG C. The cellulose ester is precipitated in a flaky, porous form. (2) A reaction mixture of cellulose acetobutyrate containing methylene chloride is extracted as above and forced into water at 50 DEG C. Specification 337,366, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], is referred to.
