Abstract

a -b -ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids are prepared by contacting a b -lactone of a monocarboxylic acid having at least one unsubstituted hydrogen atom on its a -carbon atom, and free from substituents other than unreactive hydrocarbon groups, with phosphoric acid heated to a temperature above the boiling point of the unsaturated carboxylic acid under the pressure in the reaction zone, and removing the unsaturated acid formed from the reaction zone. The process is preferably continuous, with the phosphoric acid at least 50 DEG C. above the boiling point of the acid at the operating pressure which is preferably sub-atmospheric. The lactone is fed below the surface of the phosphoric acid which is preferably of low water content and contains a polymerization inhibitor such as copper powder, or is contained in a copper reaction chamber. An example describes the preparation of acrylic acid from b -propiolactone and other suitable lactones are listed. Specification 958,226 is referred to.
