1,205,180. Epoxyalkyl esters of carboxylic acids. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 25 April, 1969, No. 21197/69. Heading C2C. A process for the catalytic preparation of an epoxyalkyl ester of a carboxylic acid having one or more carboxyl groups by reaction of an alkali metal salt of the said acid with more than the stoichiometrical amount of an epoxymonohaloalkane having the halogen atom adjacent to the epoxy group comprises successively: (1) gradually adding an aqueous alkali metal hydroxide solution having a concentration of at least 20% w. to a boiling mixture comprising the said carboxylic acid or an anhydride thereof and the said epoxyhaloalkane, at a temperature below 100‹ C. while distilling off water and epoxyhaloalkane; (2) continuing distillation, finally at a temperature which is higher than the temperature of the boiling mixture during addition of the alkali metal hydroxide, at least until the water content of the bottoms is below 0.5% w.; (3) adding the esterification catalyst; and (4) heating the mixture at a temperature of at least 50‹ C. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 936,808 and 876,125.
