Abstract

1394651 Ethyl and n-butyl acetates BP CHEMICALS INTERNATIONAL Ltd 2 Jan 1974 [12 Jan 1973] 1742/73 Heading C2C Ethyl and n-butyl acetates are co-produced by reacting a mixed alkanol feed with an equi-molar quantity of acetic acid in at elevated temperature, followed by a first distillation in a column to remove an overhead fraction of ethyl and n-butyl acetate free from n-butanol and higher boilers, and a second distillation in which the mixture of acetates is removed from the base of the column, and finally a third distillation wherein ethyl acetate is removed overhead and n-butyl acetate obtained at the base. The reaction vessel may be integral with the first distillation column and a catalyst such as sulphuric acid or p-toluene sulphonic acid may be used.
