1442337 Carboxylic acids SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 16 Aug 1973 [18 Aug 1972] 38686/73 Heading C2C In a process for the preparation of carboxylic acid or a mixture thereof by reacting an olefinically unsaturated compound on mixture with carbon monoxide and water with nickel and/or cobalt in combination with iodine as catalyst, and in which the resulting reaction mixture is phase-separated to give an aqueous phase containing the catalyst and an organic phase which contains the acid, and in which the organic phase is distilled to obtain the pure acid while the aqueous phase is recycled, the stage in which the reaction mixture with or without an organic diluent, and/or the organic phase from the phase-separation, is heated in the presence of water to 120‹ to 300‹ C. with subsequent phase-separation to isolate the carboxylic acid organic phase. Examples describe the treatment of a mixture of olefines (15-18 C) with carbon monoxide and the heat treatment of the reaction mixture at 200‹ C.; of a mixture of olefines (11-12 C) followed by heat treatment of the reaction mixture at 210-260‹ C., and the subsequent phase separation of the acids.
