Abstract
Acrylic acid, extracted from an aqueous mixture of acrylic and acetic acids by extraction with ethyl acrylate or acetate and subsequently recovered as base product by fractional distillation of the organic phase as in the parent Specification, is purified by subjecting the base product to a second fractional distillation at a base temperature of less than 90 DEG C., preferably from 50 DEG to 90 DEG C., and a pressure of not less than 50 mm. of mercury and recovering the pure acrylic acid substantially free from acetic as a base product. It is preferred to use a column of 30 theoretical plates and operate with a head pressure of 20 to 100 mm. of mercury. The example describes the use of a packed laboratory column operated as a continuous unit.
