Abstract

Vinyl esters are prepared by the interaction of acetylene and a lower mono-carboxylic acid of the aliphatic series at a temperature below 50 DEG C. in the presence of a mercury compound as catalyst, in conjunction with sulpho-acetic acid and acetic anhydride. It is preferred to work at a temperature below 25 DEG C., the acetylene being introduced at such a rate that the gas is completely absorbed. When the reaction is complete, acetate of sodium or calcium is added, and the resulting product distilled at reduced pressure; the separation of the vinyl acetate by fractionation may also be effected in this distillation. If this addition of acetate is omitted, some acetaldehyde and tar are produced. Examples are given illustrating the effect of variation in temperature on the amounts of vinyl acetate and ethylidene diacetate produced. The preparation of the mercuric sulphate catalyst is described, and also the production of vinyl propionate. In the process described in the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) the addition of acetic anhydride was optional. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
