Abstract
Vinyl esters, together with ethylidene esters as by-products, are obtained by the reaction of acetylene on a carboxylic acid in the presence of a mercury catalyst, a carboxylic acid anhydride, a sulpho-carboxylic acid and ferric sulphate, at a temperature below 50 DEG C., and preferably below 20 DEG C. Sulphuric acid may be present in the reaction mixture. The acetylene may be passed in at such a rate that it is completely absorbed, or at such a rate that vinyl ester is removed from the mixture as it is formed. When the absorption of acetylene ceases, sufficient sodium acetate to react with the sulphuric and sulphocarboxylic acids present may be added, and the mixture then distilled, preferably under reduced pressure. Examples are given of the preparation of vinyl acetate by absorption of acetylene in acetic acid containing acetic anhydride and sulphoacetic acid together with ferric sulphate and mercuric sulphate or mercuric acetate with sulphuric acid. The temperature limits given are 3 DEG C. and 18 DEG C.
