Abstract

Esters of chloromethylbenzene carboxylic acids are obtained by subjecting esters of p-toluic acid to chlorination with gaseous chlorine at a temperature between 80 DEG and 170 DEG C. In order to prepare monochloromethylbenzoic acid, chlorine is employed in an amount insufficient for the complete mono-chlorination of the starting material. The chlorination may be effected with gaseous chlorine at 125-140 DEG C. whilst irradiating the toluic acid ester with ultra-violet light. Examples disclose the production of p-monochloromethyl- and p-dichloro-methyl-benzoic acid methyl esters.
