Abstract
In a modification of the method of the parent Specification, alkyl aromatic alcohols not produced by oxidation of aromatic compounds are converted into their more readily oxidizable functional derivatives, and these are oxidized to benzene carboxylic acids. In examples, chloromethyltoluene is converted by hydrolysis with alkali and heating the mixture in methanol or water under reflux to methyl benzylmethylether or dixylylether respectively, both of which on oxidation give toluic acid containing some dicarboxylic acid; p-toluyl alcohol is converted to the acetate with acetic anhydride and on oxidation gives toluic p and p-oxymethyl benzoic acids. Other ethers of the aromatic alcohols with aliphatic alcohols and esters with aliphatic acids are also specified as suitable for the oxidation.
