Abstract
In a process for the manufacture of acetoacetic acid esters by the reaction of diketene with an alcohol in the presence of a catalyst of alkaline reaction, the diketene is gradually added to the alcohol at the boiling temperature of the reaction mixture, at a rate such that the mixture is maintained at the boil. In an example diketene is gradually added to a solution of sodium ethylate in methyl alcohol under reflux to obtain methyl acetoacetate. Ethyl acetoacetate may be similarly obtained using ethyl alcohol. Sodium acetate or an organic tertiary amine can also be used as catalyst. Crude diketene containing small amounts of acetic anhydride and higher ketene polymers may be employed as starting materials.
