Abstract
3 : 31-Methylene-bis-(4-hydroxycoumarin) is prepared by reacting 4-hydroxycoumarin with formaldehyde or a polymer of formaldehyde in an organic solvent, preferably at elevated temperature. The formaldehyde may be used in either aqueous solution or in the gaseous form. The preferred solvent is glacial acetic acid, but methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, iso-propyl, n-butyl, iso-butyl alcohols, acetone and dioxane may also be used. In examples: (1) formalin is added to a glacial acetic acid solution of 4-hydroxycoumarin at 100 DEG C.; (2) formalin is added to a solution of 4-hydroxycoumarin in boiling dioxane; (3) 40 per cent formaldehyde is added to a boiling solution of 4-hydroxycoumarin in methanol and the mixture refluxed; (4) 40 per cent formaldehyde is added to a boiling solution of 4-hydroxycoumarin in iso-propyl alcohol. In each of the examples, the product is 3 : 31-methylene-bis-(4-hydroxycoumarin).
