Abstract
Finely-divided quinacridones are made by precipitating a quinacridone from a polyphosphoric acid solution thereof by dilution with a water-miscible solvent, the said solution being prepared by the ring-closure of a 2 : 5-diarylaminoterephthalic acid by heating with at least an equal weight of a polyphosphoric acid having an orthophosphoric acid equivalent of at least 105%. Water-miscible solvents specified are methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, glycerol, diacetone alcohol, diethylene glycol and acetone or mixtures thereof with water or with other organic liquids such as a mixture of denatured alcohol, ethyl acetate and aviation gasoline. To prevent reaction of the polyphosphoric acid with the solvent, the solution may first be diluted with water or syrupy orthophosphoric acid. Examples are given.
