Abstract

Quinacridine-7: 14-diones are made by condensing a 2: 5-di-(arylamino) terephthalic acid or an ester thereof by heating at a temperature above 100 DEG C. with one of the specific acid condensing agents referred to below in the presence of a polar organic solvent containing at least one carboxylic acid, carbonyl, hydroxy or amino group. The specific acid condensing agents are (1) compounds of the formula Z-SO3H where Z is OH, alkoxy, aralkoxy, aroxy, a hydrocarbon radical or aryl; (2) hydrogen sulphates or acidic sulphates; or (3) phosphoric acid phosphorus pentoxide or polyphosphoric acid. The polar organic solvent is a mono- or polyhydric alcohol, a phenol, ketone, aliphatic or aromatic carboxylic acid or a primary, secondary or tertiary amine and a list of such solvents is given. In examples quinacridones are made using as condensing agents sulphuric acid, sodium bisulphate, phosphoric acid, phosphorus pentoxide, ethylene glycol mono - sulphuric acid ester and methane -, ethane -, toluene - and xylene - sulphonic acids and as organic solvent glacial acetic acid, mono-chloracetic acid, benzoic acid, ethylene glycol, methanol, ethanol and N-dimethyl-aniline.
