Abstract

Polyphosphoric acid esters are prepared by reacting a derivative of a poly basic phosphoric acid which is at least doubly esterifiable with one or more polyhydric, preferably dihydric, aliphatic or aromatic alcohols, in such proportions that for each molecule of acid derivative there are two alcoholic hydroxyl groups. If trebly esterifiable acid derivatives are used, the remaining reactive acid group may be reacted subsequently or simultaneously with water, inorganic or organic compounds such as monohydric alcohols, preferably with 8 to 18 carbon atoms, alkylated phenols and naphthols, resin alcohols, oxyalkylated hydroxyl or carboxyl compounds such as polyglycolethers of fatty alcohols or phenols, stearoyl glycols and distearoyl glycerine, and ethylene oxide. Remaining hydroxyl groups from the ethylene oxide treatment may be reacted with chloroacetic acid. Dihydric alcohols referred to are octadecanediol and polyethylene glycols of molecular weight up to 4,000. The products are surface active and thickening agents and components for ointments and creams. In examples: (i) a polyglycol of molecular weight 700 dissolved in benzene is reacted with phosphorus oxychloride for 90 minutes and the product reacted with water to give a wax-like mass after removal of solvent and cooling; (2) a polyglycol of molecular weight 450 is reacted with phosphorus oxychloride in the presence of phosphorus trichloride and the product esterified with a fatty alcohol mixture of mean molecular weight 186; (3) a polyglycol of molecular weight 300 and xylenol are dissolved in trichlorethylene and esterified with phosphorus oxychloride for two hours, the reaction then being stopped by blowing out with steam.
