Abstract

Ethyl-anthraquinonyl-21-methylene malonate is made by reacting formyl-2-anthraquinone dissolved in sulphuric acid with ethyl-malonate, the solution being poured on ice and the resultant precipitate washed with water and dried. Specification 965,678 is referred to.ALSO:A process for the manufacture of a polyanthraquinonyl methylene malonate of a linear polyalcohol having one hydroxyl group at each end of its chain comprises heating an alkyl anthraquinonyl-21-methylene malonate with a linear polyalcohol in the presence of an esterification catalyst, the resultant anthraquinonyl-21-methylene malonate of the polyalcohol being polymerized by heating under vacuum. The examples describe the preparation of polymers from ethyl-anthraquinonyl-21-methylene malonate and:-(1) butane diol-1:4 and (2) ethylene glycol, the specified esterification catalyst being butyl titanate. The polyesters which are soluble in dimethyl formamide or chloroform may be catalytically hydrogenated in solution in the presence of palladium or alumina or hydrogenated in the solid state by a hydrochloric acid solution of titanium trichloride, the resultant hydrogenated derivative of the latter process being re-oxidized by air with the resultant formation of hydrogen peroxide.
