Abstract

Polyvinyl acetals of formyl-2-anthraquinone may be prepared by reacting formyl-2-anthraquinone with polyvinyl alcohol in dimethyl sulphoxide in the presence of formic acid or a strong acid, or with a suspension of polyvinyl acetate in an aliphatic alcohol in the presence of a strong acid. The preferred strong acid is sulphuric acid. The polymers may be reduced with titanium trichloride and hydrochloric acid or with sodium hydrosulphite, and re-oxidized with air in the presence of sodium metaphosphate with the production of hydrogen peroxide. Examples describe the preparation of the polymers by reacting (1 to 4) formyl-2-anthraquinone with polyvinyl alcohol in dimethyl sulphoxide in the presence of sulphuric acid, and (5 and 6) formyl-2-anthraquinone with polyvinyl acetate in methanol in the presence of sulphuric acid, and the reduction and subsequent reoxidation thereof to provide hydrogen peroxide in good yield.
