Abstract

Water-soluble sulphuric acid ester salts of dyes which, in the form of their free acids, have the general formula <FORM:0930294/IV(a)/1> in which in each anthracene nucleus one of the X's is hydrogen, chlorine or methyl and the other X's are hydrogen, are made by acylating a leuco ester of the formula <FORM:0930294/IV(a)/2> with 41-nitro-diphenyl-4-carboxylic acid chloride and reducing the product in an alkaline medium in two stages, first to yield a product at least partially in the azoxy-form, using reducing agents such as glucose or zinc dust, and then to yield a product wholly in the azo-form, using reducing agents such as sodium dithionite or sodium formaldehyde-sulphoxylate.
