Abstract
Water-soluble salts of sulphuric esters of difficultly esterifiable leuco anthraquinone vat dyestuffs are made by treating the dye in a mixture of pyridine and/or a homologue or homologues thereof with one or more tertiary amines (other than diethylcyclohexylamine) of the general formula: <FORM:0852519/IV (c)/1> where X is pentamethylene which may be substituted by methyl, R1 is methyl, ethyl, propyl or butyl and R2 is ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl or cyclohexyl, the mixture containing 10-60% by weight of the tertiary amine or amines of the above formula, and in the presence of finely divided iron, cobalt, zinc, copper or a copper alloy, with chlorosulphonic acid in the form of its addition products with the said bases, at least 2 molecular proportions of chlorosulphonic acid being present for each anthraquinone nucleus present in the dyestuff, at least 1,4 molecular proportions of the said tertiary amine or amines being present for every 2 molecular proportions of chlorosulphonic acid except that if less than 4 molecular proportions of the acid is used then not less than 2 molecular proportions of said tertiary amine or amines is present for every 2 molecular proportions of acid, and at least 1,5 atomic proportions of metal being present for each anthraquinone nucleus in the dyestuff, and converting the resulting sulphuric acid ester into a water-soluble ester salt.
