Leuco compounds oj vat dyes, esters of.-The process of the parent Specification, according to which vat dyestuffs are treated, in presence of a metal and a tertiary base, with chlorsulphonic acid or its salts, fuming sulphonic acid, sulphuric anhydride, or salts of pyrosulphuric acid, is effected in the presence also of a diluent such as acetone or nitrobenzene. The products can be used for dyeing and printing by the methods described in the parent Specification. Examples are given according to which (1) dimethoxydibenzanthrone is treated with zinc dust and sodium chlorsulphonate in a mixture of pyridine and acetone, (2) flavanthrone is treated with copper powder and sodium chlorsulphonate in a mixture of pyridine and nitrobenzene.
