306,573. Barnes, R. S., Harris, J. E. G,., Thomas, J., and Scottish Dyes, Ltd. Nov. 17, 1927, Anthraquinoneacridones; leuco compounds of vat dyes, esters of.- Anthraquinone carboxylic acids containing an arylamino substituent in the o-position to the carboxylic group are treated with a tertiary base-sulphuric anhydride compound in the presence of a metal, e.g. copper, and an excess of a tertiary base. The products, which are possibly esters of anthrahydroquinone carboxylic acids containing an o-arylamino substituent., are converted into anthraquinoneacridones by working up with alkali and treating with acid oxidizing agents. In examples, (1) 1- #-naphthylamino-anthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid is treated with pyridine and pyridine sulphur trioxide in the presence of copper, the melt is added to water containing caustic soda, steam distilled to remove the pyridine and filtered; the product may be isolated in solid form from the filtrate, or the latter may be used directly for dyeing and printing; thus, cotton yarn may be dyed therewith with the addition of salt and developed in a dilute solution of acid ferric chloride, whereby a pink shade, apparently identical with that from the 1 : 2-naphthacridone, is obtained; (2) methylchlorsulphonate or oleum and pyridine are employed instead of pyridine sulphuric anhydride in example (1), and the liquor obtained after treating with caustic soda and distilling off the pyridine is run into a solution containing ferric. chloride and hydrochloric acid; the anthraquinone naphthacridone is precipitated and filtered off: (3) 1-anilidoanthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid is treated with pyridine sulphur trioxide. or methylchlorsulphonate, pyridine and copper; the product obtained may be treated with an acid oxidizing agent for the production of the acridone in substance or on the fibre; (4) 1-p-chloranilidoanthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid is similarly treated.
