Abstract

260,638. Wylam, B., Harris, J. E. G., Thomas, J., and Scottish Dyes, Ltd. April 30, 1925. Leuco compounds of vat-dyes, sulphuric esters of.-Leuco flavanthrone is converted into a red compound by treatment with an alkylsulphuric halide in the presence of a tertiary base at temperatures above about 50‹ C. The tertiary base is preferably employed in excess of the quantity corresponding to 1 mol. base to 1 mol. alkylsulphuric halide. The reaction product, on treatment with an alkali, yields a solution from which the compound can be salted out, or which can be used for dyeing or printing, the yellow shade of the flavanthrone being developed by hydrolysis and oxidation on the fibre. According to an example, methylsulphuric acid chloride is mixed with pyridine in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide, leuco-flavanthrone added, and the whole heated to 60‹ C. ; the product is poured into dilute ammonia to precipitate the red compound which mav be used directly for dyeing or may be dissolved in sodium carbonate, aerated to remove leuco-flavanthrone, and salted out.
