Abstract

The invention comprises sulphochloracetic acid ester salts of leuco vat dyes which are made by reacting the leuco compound of a vat dye with a halide of sulphochloracetic acid in presence of a tertiary base, and converting the compound obtained to a stable water-soluble salt. The dyestuff may be simultaneously reduced and esterified in presence of a metal. In examples, the following are heated in pyridine with iron powder, sulphochloracetic acid, and p-toluene sulphochloride, while passing carbon dioxide through the mixture:- (1) Bz2 : Bz21 - dimethoxydibenzanthrone (phosgene may replace the p-toluene sulphochloride), (2) 5.51.7.11 - tetrabromindigo, (3) dibrom - dibenzpyrenequinone, (4) 4.41-dimethyl - 6.61 - dichloro - thioindigo, (5) the alkaline condensation product of Bz- 1 - (a-anthraquinonyl) - aminobenzanthrone. Also in examples, the already-formed leuco compound of 5.51 - dichloro - 7.71 - dimethyl thioindigo is reacted with sulphochloracetic acid and p-toluenesulphochloride in pyridine. The product in each case is converted to the sodium salt by treatment with sodium carbonate or bicarbonate solution and then salting out. Other vat dyes are listed.
