Abstract

The invention comprises a black vat dyestuff of the formula: <FORM:0807595/IV (c)/1> and the method for making it by heating a compound of the formula: <FORM:0807595/IV (c)/2> with ethyl chlorocarbonate, brominating the product to a dibromo derivative and autoclaving the latter with aqueous ammonia in the presence of a copper salt catalyst. An example is given. The leuco sulphuric acid ester salt is made by stirring the dye at 53-55 DEG C. under carbon dioxide with pyridine and chlorosulphonic acid in the presence of cuprous chloride and finely-divided iron obtained by the reduction of iron oxide by hydrogen.
