Abstract

Dyes of the acedianthrone series which contain sulphur are made from the products of Specification 299,972, [Class 2 (iii)], (which are obtained by treating glyoxal-anthrone or substituted anthrone reaction products with an alkaline melt) by treating with a halide of a trivalent metal and one of the following;-sulphur, a halide of sulphurous acid, an alkali metal sulphide or hydrosulphite, or a sulphur halide. The reaction may be carried out at low temperatures, and the products dye or print yellow shades. In examples, (1) the products obtained according to Specificatin 299,972 from glyoxal and anthrone, 1-chloroanthrone, or 2-chloroanthrone are reacted with aluminium or ferrichloride, and also with thionyl and sulphur chlorides, separately or as a mixture, in some cases with sodium or potassium chloride or sulphur dioxide. (2) the product obtained according to Specification 299,972 from the anthrone derived from 3\sv-chloro-4\sv-methylbenzophenone-2-carboxylic acid or from 2.6-dichloroanthrone is reacted with aluminium chloride, sodium chloride, and thionyl chloride; (3) the product obtained similarly from 2-chloroanthrone is reacted with aluminium chloride with or without rock salt, and with (a) sulphur dioxide and sulphur, (b) sulphur dioxide and sodium sulphide, (c) sodium hydrosulphite.
