Abstract
New vat dyes containing sulphur are made by treating with aluminium chloride and a halide of sulphur, such as sulphur chloride, or a halogen compound of an acid of sulphur such as a thionyl or sulphuryl halide at elevated temperatures anthrimides having linked to the nitrogen atom an anthraquinonyl radical which may be substituted and a radical of a ring system consisting of six condensed benzene nuclei which may be condensed with rings of five carbon atoms. The melting point of the mixture may be lowered by addition of alkali chloride or bisulphite or sulphurous acid. In examples, the following are added to a melt of aluminium chloride, rock salt, and thionyl or sulphuryl chloride; (1) the anthrimide prepared from 1- or 2-aminoanthraquinone or 1-amino-4- or 5-benzoylamino - anthraquinone or 3\sv-4\sv-phthaloyl-6-amino-acridone and the dichloracedianthrone from 1-chloranthrone; (2) the anthrimide from dibromoanthanthrone and 1-aminoanthraquinone.
