Abstract

Sulphur dyes are made by treating with a sulphurizing agent in the presence of a copper compound and at a raised temperature, a compound which in its non-ionized form has the formula:- <FORM:0925114/IV(a)/1> in which Y is hydroxy or halogen and Z is a -CO- or -SO2- group. Sulphurizing agents mentioned are elementary sulphur or an alkalimetal polysulphide obtained by melting sulphur with an alkali metal sulphide if desired in the presence of an alkali-metal hydroxide. Copper compounds specified are the sulphate and chloride. Examples are given. The dyes dye cellulose fibres from a sodium sulphide or hydrosulphite vat in olive-green shades.
